Once put in water this substance begins to flow out of the branch and starts to glow bluish in the dark under UV-light. The video is not slowed down and it shows the movement of the substance in real time. This tree is very common in Zurich and when I came across this experiment a couple years ago I was immediately fascinated by it’s presence. I was so irritated and I started to question my relationship and my approach towards other living forms. Meggen — Ganz am Anfang der Ausstellung hängt ein bemerkenswertes Werk von Denis Twerenbold (*1982).&nbsp;‹squeezate›, 2021, besteht aus gelbgrün leuchtendem Acrylglas, in das ein Kreis eingraviert ist – Konzeptkunst, möchte man meinen. Die Arbeit entstand allerdings in enger Auseinandersetzung mit den Naturwissenschaften. Beim Kreis handelt es sich um den Rand des glockenförmigen Körpers einer Atlantikqualle. An sich transparent, leuchtet die Qualle als Reaktion auf äussere Reize grün auf. Das fluoreszierende Protein (GFP) kommt in der Medizin zum Einsatz, wird aber auch für Experimente genutzt, etwa für genmanipulierte Leuchtfische. Biolumineszenz und Fragen der Manipulation sind in den präsentierten Arbeiten zentral. Das gilt für die Gruppe von Delphinköpfen ‹GFP Dolphin I-V›, 2020, ebenso wie für den «Geistersaft» (Aesculin) der Rosskastanie, der in einer Videoarbeit sichtbar gemacht wird. Auch die ‹Glowing Animals› widmen sich dieser Thematik. Twerenbold hat analoge Schwarzweissfotografien von Tieren mit Textmarker koloriert, sodass sie einem in poppigem Neongelb entgegenspringen. Die Bildmanipulationen erzeugen ein Gefühls-Amalgam aus Faszination und Beunruhigung. Im Kern geht es immer auch um Eingriffe des Menschen in die Natur, um Bio-Macht.
